Employee in this position provides utility design, field mapping, drawings, and associated technical support as needed for all city divisions. Duties include job staking, engineering design and field work associated with the construction of electric, natural gas, water, sewer and telecommunications utilities, updating and maintaining GIS maps and databases, preparing and submitting GDOT permits, researching property records, training crews to use mapping software, and monitoring construction projects. Employee reports directly to the Director of Utilities but coordinates most work with division Superintendents.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Prepares construction drawings for utility projects.
  • Surveys and stakes construction jobs.
  • Performs field inspections of utility work.
  • Updates utility, zoning, and public safety maps.
  • Prepares miscellaneous drawings for all city divisions as requested.
  • Coordinates GIS efforts with Troup County and other entities.
  • Troubleshoots field tablets, computers, SCADA devices, and metering equipment.
  • Issues pole attachment and utility right-of-way permits.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Skill in using AutoCAD, GIS, and ESRI Field Maps.
  • Knowledge of survey equipment and methods used in line staking.
  • Knowledge of utility construction specifications, materials and methods.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all terrain and weather conditions.
  • Ability to make quick, sound, and safe decisions.
  • Ability to work independently and seek out areas for improvement.

NECESSARY TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma.
  • Associates degree in science, math, or technology preferred.
  • Three years of related work experience.
  • Possess a valid Georgia driver’s license.
