JOB DESCRIPTION

Under close supervision of Parks Worker III, an employee in this position performs entry level duties as assigned in maintenance of City Parks, The Thread and other recreational or landscaped areas. Performs routine maintenance on buildings and facilities, landscape areas, playground equipment and parkways. Employee should report any facility problems, acts of vandalism, or illegal activities to their supervisor immediately. Responsible for janitorial cleaning, including restock of products, and opening/closing of facilities at all park restroom location. Empties trash receptacles, light pruning and other related duties as assigned



Examples of Work

  • Participate in various grounds maintenance functions: mow, trim, edge, fertilize, aerate, irrigate, weed, prune and mulch.
  • Participate in preparing soil for planting, seed and re-sod lawn areas, plant, stake, tie and fertilize a variety of trees, transplant seedlings, shrubs and trees as necessary
  • Participate in landscape maintenance chemical application duties
  • Participate in clearing limbs and brush from signs, street lights, removal of stumps and dead/fallen trees
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools, such as: hand mowers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, long-handled clippers and similar tools, weed eaters, chainsaws rakes, shovels, hoes, brooms and other maintenance tools
  • Operate a variety of light duty motorized equipment and pick-up trucks
  • Unload/load trucks of refuse, trimmings, sand, rock, mulch and other material
  • Perform preventative maintenance to vehicles, equipment and tools, sometimes making minor adjustments/repairs
  • Assist in set-up/take-down of Showmobile and special events
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Qualification

  • High school diploma/GED equivalent
  • Possess a valid drivers’ license
  • Some experience in operation of tractor, mowers, hand and power tools

Desirable Training and Experience

  • Two years’ minimum experience in similar occupation

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

  • Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of assigned equipment
  • • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the geography of the City • Skill in the operation of hand and power tools • Ability to follow oral and written instructions • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds • Ability to interact effectively and courteously with the public, coworkers and vendors • Ability to take coaching, instruction and feedback with a cooperative and positive attitude • Willingness to work in inclement weather • Must be available to work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays

Physical Demands

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment such as: walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach twist, grasp and make repetitive hand movement. The performance of daily duties may require climbing on ladders, operating assigned equipment and vehicles, lifting/carrying/pushing moderate to heavy amounts of weight and verbally communicate to exchange information. May be required to respond to emergency and public calls after hours, including evenings and weekends.


Work Environment

Work is usually performed in an outdoor field environment. This results in exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, hazardous traffic and all types of weather/temperature conditions. Work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery and uneven surfaces, as well as, rough terrain is common.
